Let’s get physical

How is it that one can exercise on a regular basis – run, walk, stretch, do some yoga, lift weights – and still have sore legs and really tight muscles after a couple of hours of picking up dead leaves and apples in the yard?

I swear, sometimes I wonder why I even bother working out at all.

Or maybe I should just buy a condo and give up being a house owner.

  1. Heh heh… I almost revised the post before publication by adding a line stating that « anybody who mentioned age as a factor would end up with the dead apples… »

But then again I thought: « What if Michel wants to comment? » ;-)

The sad thing is, I think you’re probably right.

  2. Umm, but did you stretch before and after? (Obvious (and not mean!) answer is, not the same muscles are being used… but be careful: my mom once gave herself tendonitis raking leaves! Mind you, we had LAND, not a yard…)

  3. @vieux bandit: I hate the idea that I have to stretch before raking leaves… but I guess it would help next time!
Those little cherry apples are a killer to pick up, and they are EVERYWHERE!

  4. Raking leaves is exercise! Sport even! Extreme, sometimes! I only had a large maple (and I love raking, especially when it’s nippy out), and it was healthy enough not to produce apples, so I can’t feel your pain…

Seriously: think about the movements involved — what sport has those?
