The acceptable face of blogging

From BBC news, this gem:

Facebook is the acceptable face of blogging – you can reflect your life and personality online without being seen as a « blogger », which often carries a geeky stigma.

There are quite a few things wrong with this statement. First of all, I don’t think there is such a thing as a geeky stigma anymore. If any person looks at your blog and says to you « oh, you are so geeky for having a blog », trust me, it will feel like a compliment (especially coming from that person).

And not every personal space on the Web is a blog. Facebook has attracted a lot of ex-bloggers (and bloggers) because it is less demanding and perhaps, to some people, more entertaining than a blog. They can keep in touch with their network of friends (a lot of them who were never tempted to read blogs before) and have fun with silly applications (drinks! zombies! pokes!) without the weight of responsibilities and the occasional bout of loneliness and introspection that come with a blog.

  1. Ish… Moi j’ai toujours été un peu mal à l’aise avec le terme blogueur, à cause justement du caractère passablement geek de l’entreprise (au début!).

Ben tu vois, j’ai pas de problème à me dire geek et blogueuse (et tant d’autres choses encore!), mais Facebookeuse (soyons francs, ce terme se développera si ce n’est pas encore fait!), ça, je n’aimerais pas. Mais bon, hein, on ne m’a toujours pas convaincue du bénéfice ou du plaisir de la chose… bien au contraire. Pour moi, Facebook va dans la même catégorie que le téléphone cellulaire: un cossin qui vous fait plaisir (tant mieux) et que vous trouvez utile (bravo), mais qui me laisse de marbre (et vous de dire tant pis pour toi (dans le meilleur des cas; plus souvent vous tentez de me convaincre!), et moi de rigoler doucement dans mon coin, secouant la tête…).

  3. Geek? Moi????

    Si c’est un compliment, pas sûre toutefois que les vrais de vrais geeks soient contents qu’on m’associe à eux! Comme on dit qu’on est tous le « quétaine » de quelqu’un d’autre, on doit sûrement tous être le geek de quelqu’un d’autre aussi… ;-)

  6. Complètement en d’accord avec vieux bandit. I enjoy the geek stigma, of course. The whole notion of such a stigma is geared towards people who now know about blogging and think they need to get on that bandwagon to be web-fashionable. So yes, Facebook is perfect for that.

    I completely distrust Facebook and I believe it is up to no good. I think these nefarious thoughts every time I add another application to my profile or accept a superpoke, of course.
